Yoti How-to Guide

Who are Yoti?

Yoti are an identity service provider (IDSP) certified by the UK Government to carry out, amongst other things, UK right to work checks and digital ID checks to the standards required for UK criminal checks. Certn have partnered with Yoti to facilitate digital ID checks as part of the background screening requested by our clients.

What is a digital ID check?

Digital ID - or digital identity verification - is the process of confirming the identity of an individual using digital means online. It involves validating the authenticity of the information provided by you against trusted sources or databases to ensure that you are who you claim to be.

What are the benefits to using digital ID?

The main benefit to you and to our clients is that digital ID is faster than verifying your identity manually. With digital ID you will receive a verification result from Yoti in minutes, and if you have a passport with a biometric chip (ePassport), this can be used to reduce the amount of information and supporting documentation you need to provide. Manual ID verification often requires travel to meet with prospective employers face to face and for documents to be checked and copied. This can takes days and slows down the recruitment process for you and our clients. Additionally, automated digital identity verification systems are less prone to errors compared to manual verification processes, where human error can lead to mistakes and delays. Digital systems use sophisticated algorithms to ensure accuracy and consistency in identity verification, minimising the likelihood of errors.

What are the benefits to using the Yoti app?

By using the Yoti app, the option to link an ePassport to your digital identity is unlocked. Linking an ePassport allows Yoti to use the biometric data stored on the chip in your ePassport to verify parts of your identity. This speeds up the digital ID process and gives you the best chance to successfully verify your identity. You can still proceed without the Yoti app, but the digital ID process is likely to take longer and you may need to provide more supporting documentation to successfully verify your identity.

How does digital ID work?

The process of digital identity verification includes the following steps:

Is digital ID secure?

Yes. As a certified IDSP, Yoti have to pass audits from regulatory authorities and adhere to data security standards such as SOC2 and ISO27001. Throughout the verification process, sensitive personal information and identity data are encrypted to protect candidates from unauthorised access or interception. Robust encryption protocols ensure the security and privacy of candidates' data. More information about Yoti's privacy policy can be found here.
